WHAT IS DIAMOND TOMATO®?
They are a special, natural, non-genetically modified (non-GMO) breed of white tomatoes originating from Israel.
Unlike regular red or other coloured tomatoes that contain coloured carotenoids such as lycopene, white tomatoes contain colourless carotenoids, namely Phytoene and Phytofluene. This gives them unique benefits for skin care which will be elaborated on below!
White tomatoes are edible, and they are often sweeter and less acidic than the common red tomatoes.
White tomatoes have gained popularity in the skin care industry because of its unique ability to alleviate skin problems such as hyperpigmentation and
provide skin whitening benefits.
HOW DOES DIAMOND TOMATO® WORK?
White tomatoes do not absorb light from the visible spectrum – they reflect visible white light and thus appear white.
Instead, the colourless carotenoids in white tomatoes absorb light from a lower wavelength such as UV rays. Thus, it helps to protect the skin against harmful UV radiation.
In particular, there are 2 types of UV rays that damage our skin:
UV-A and UV-B. UV-A rays are present in up to 95% of UV radiation and is the main cause of skin ageing and wrinkles. UV-A rays are absorbed by the colourless carotenoid, Phytofluene. UV-B rays are absorbed by Phytoene. Together, these colourless carotenoids
provide complete protection against the 2 types of UV rays.
Diamond Tomato® also inhibits the formation of melanin, a natural skin pigment produced by melanocyte cells in our skin. Sunlight – UV-A rays in particular – trigger melanocytes to produce more melanin and thus cause sunspots or hyperpigmentation.
